In 1978, when I was in grade 1, I was enamored with the idea of owning a new pocket calculator, all the rage for young students at the time. After pitching the idea to my father, he told me that I could have one if I learned my times tables. Well, that was all the motivation I needed to memorize those one hundred numbers. The funny thing was, upon completion of that task, I realized that I no longer needed a calculator. This simple act of parental trickery might have set the stage for my future academic and professional career. For this, I am thankful for my father.
My most cherished memory with him was the family’s yearly pilgrimage to Crystal Beach Amusement Park with its fun house, roller coasters, water slides and attractions of all varieties. Of course, there was the mandatory stoppage at Jocko’s Restaurant for pancakes on the way.
He was happy to have involved himself in coaching soccer and scouting, making it clear how much he cared about his family.
When I was sixteen years of age, I expressed the desire to switch high schools. After I carefully explained all the reasons for the change, he was conscientious enough to acknowledge and understand my reasons and supported the decision, perhaps with reservations. I’m so thankful for this, as it formed the basis of my adult independence through life.
I’m amazed that he had the courage to leave his family and home country of The Netherlands to come to Canada. Knowing that he learned a new language and forged a career served as an inspiration to me. I appreciated that he spent the time and energy to bring our family back to The Netherlands for a few trips, and as I write this, I am continuing that tradition of travel, experiencing a new city in Europe.
For the last twenty-five years I have benefited from either a weekly phone call or a visit to London, and I’ll miss those chats now. During that time, we enjoyed playing pool when I returned from Toronto and his competitive streak was alive and well through to our last game.
I’m thankful that my father was able to find new love in his later years, and that he enjoyed a strong, competitive spirit through bridge, up until his last year. The picture below is of the two of us attending a Buffalo Bills game, our last big trip together.
His positive nature, sense of fairness and sense of humour were appreciated and will be missed by many.

So there we were. We were going to surprise Camiel and Elinor as we went to The Netherlands to do our wedding vows with our family in Helmond.
Elinor and Camiel along with members of his family joined us in the chapel in Binderen in Helmond for the Mass. We were so happy to have them with us.
Then it happened. Communion time. The priest came to give communion. He stood in front of Camiel and there was a conversation. We learned later that Camiel after marrying Elinor was told by some priest that he was not allowed communion. The Dutch priest was appaled and said loudly that Jesus did not want anyone to be separated from Him. He gave Camiel communion which caused Camiel to break down in tears. He so loved his church and Jesus but was denied being full part of the church for 25 years.
This is the day Camiel came down to his beloved church. He already had annulment papers and his and Elinor's marriage was blessed at St. John the Divine parish shortly afterwards.
This is probably the most moving and wonderful memory for Camiel and Elinor.
He has now gone to be with our Lord in heaven and we are very thankful that he was allowed to be with Jesus even while still on earth.
May God bless him and Elinor.

Camiel de Vries is known by me as my godfather uncle Miel, the oldest brother of my father Marcel. Uncle Miel and our dad look very alike and since our dad deceased in 1996, Uncle Miel always showed us how our dad would have aged.
Uncle Miel visited the Netherlanda quite some times and it was always nice to meet him. It was a big surprise that he visited my doctorate ceremony in ‘99.
I wish Mark,Michael,Elanor en Trudy my condoleances, all the best en lots of love, Miranda de Vries ( and family)

It may sound strange, but I saw my eldest brother just a couple of times. He left Holland in 1963. At that time I was only eight years old and in those years the trip was so expensive that there was no possibility to sail or fly overseas. Our parents didn’t have the money to do so. A terrible car accident urged them to visit their son in St. Catharines, the place where he lived at that time.
It was only in the year 2008 that I visited Miel & Elinor for the first time! I was accompanied by my wife Wil, my brother Jos and his wife Elly (for them it was also their first visit to London, Canada). We wanted to see them without announcing up front that we were planning to come. Shortly before our trip we heard that Miel was having heartproblems and that he was hospitalized. Luckily he left the hospital before our arrival and we had an awesome time together. Of course it was wonderful to see our family in their ‘own country’, because Miel had become a real Canadian, but with - more than - warm feelings for Holland.
Fortunately Miel visited – in the years that they could afford it – his family. Alone, but also often together with Elinor. Our visits (later on we went to London again), but especially his regular visits to Holland, caused that Miel and I got a special bond.
Of course I have a cellphone, but I kept my land line for the phonecalls to and from Canada. I can’t count the number of calls that we had together. Mostly after a special sportsgame, because he was a ‘crazy’ sportsfan. Not only soccer (Dutch soccerteam, AZ Alkmaar, Ajax Amsterdam) but also iceskating, cycling and athletics. He really followed everything, even more than I did.
During those phonecalls he kept saying how very happy and thankful he was with Elinor (she was his main prize in the lottery) and how proud he was of both his sons, Mark and Mike.
Only a week after Miels passing, Wil and I already miss him very much. The phone doesn’t ring anymore. But we know that not only with us, but also with a lot of people he left an unforgettable impression. And that ’s because he was a great and honest guy.
Miel, thank you for that!!
Dear brother, please pass our kind regards to (y)our parents, (y)our sister Ineke and (y)our brothers Marcel, Hans, Thom and Theo (who all passed away before). And … take a little care of us Dutchies and of all your Canadian friends!
Love from your youngest brother Bart and Wil, Heiloo, Holland
