Obituary
Obituary of Bill Besterd
It is with deep regret and sadness that we announce that Bill Besterd, unexpectedly passed away on May 14, 2024 in his 92nd year. He spent his final days surrounded by his loved ones. Bill was born November 1, 1932 in London Ontario to Wilbert and Mae Besterd. He was blessed with a very rich life, excelling in each of his roles; as a husband, a brother, a father, a grandfather, a great grandfather, an uncle, a mentor, an employer and a friend.
He is survived by his dear friend, Carolyn Buchanan, his sister, Betty Hunt, his children Debbie (Rick) Donohue, John Besterd (Maria Hauschel) and Steve Besterd, his 8 grandchildren and his 8 great grandchildren as well as uncle to 25 nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his loving wife of 48 years, Dorothy Besterd, his siblings, Dorothy, Shirley, Marge, Harvey, Ruth, Lorraine and Doug.
Bill was a larger than life figure, loved and respected by everyone he encountered. Being born during The Great Depression taught Bill invaluable life lessons- to work hard, work smart, live life to the fullest and be generous to others.
He left his mark on the regional construction industry. He was founder and president of Besterd Mechanical, served on the City of London Master Certification Board for aspiring apprentices, was past president of the London Mechanical Contractors Association (MCA) and was a board member of the Ontario (MCA). Bill was also a long-term board member for Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
Bill was passionate about his hobbies, which included chatting for hours on the phone, golf, travel and most of all standardbred horse racing. His love of these 4 legged athletes stretched over 60 years, often taking him on a quick flight to The Meadowlands to watch one race.
Throughout Bill’s life he remained modest and humble, always available to lend a hand or an ear. In his own way, he was a gentle giant. His passing will leave a large hole in all of our hearts, but his memory will live on in all who knew him and loved him.
The family would like to send a special thank you to his special friend and caretaker, Marsha who loved him dearly and was instrumental in giving Bill an amazing final year of life. We would also like to thank the incredible professionals at University Hospital in London for all of their care.
Visitation will be held at Westview Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road, on June 5th between 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. A celebration of life will be held at Westview on June 6th at 11 AM.
