Obituary of Barbara Ann Gilbert
Barbara Ann Gilbert
1935 –2024
It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Barbara Ann Gilbert at University Hospital in London on June 10th, 2024, in her 89th year. Barbara is survived by her devoted husband of over 64 years, John, her son David Gilbert (Kathy), daughter Joanne Murphy, and her cherished grandchildren Samantha, Jacqueline, and Phillip. She will be deeply missed by her family in England, including her sister Norma (Brian), brother Alan, sister-in-law Valerie, niece Sally, nephews Nathan (Jess), Rob (Suzanne) and James (Kerry), as well as several cousins and many friends. Barbara is also lovingly remembered by her goddaughter Carlyn Easterbrook-Gardner.
Born in Hull, UK, Barbara moved to Edmonton, Alberta, in 1960 after she and John married, and later settled in Sarnia before relocating to London in 2014.
From a young age, Barbara's passion for music was evident through her piano lessons, which blossomed into a lifelong devotion. From their home in Sarnia, she taught recorder and music lessons to young children using the Carl Orff methodology, which she studied at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Over her more than 30-year teaching career, Barbara's kindness and individual attention had a lasting impact on every child she taught.
Barbara's love extended beyond her family and music. She found joy in traveling, theatre, gardening, card-making, and scrapbooking. Her kind, gentle nature and radiant smile will forever be remembered by all who knew her.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Kathleen Gannon, Rev. Ann Corbet, the compassionate doctors, nurses, and staff at University Hospital, as well as the London Alzheimer's Society for their care and support.
Cremation has taken place, and a celebration of Barbara's life will be held on Tuesday, June 25th at 11:00 am at Siloam United Church, 1240 Fanshawe Park Road E, London, with reception to follow in the church hall.
In lieu of flowers, charitable donations to the London Alzheimer's Society or Siloam United Church would be appreciated.
